In 1956, Irma
Wassall and a small group of guitarists and afficianados got together
and formed the Wichita Society of the Classical Guitar. The idea was
to present Irma's guitar teacher, Maestro Rey de la Torre, to the
Wichita concert stage. This first classical guitar concert in Wichita
took place in October of 1956. Many other concerts featuring Rey de
la Torre, as well as, Andres Segovia, Oscar Ghiglia, Michael Lorimer
and many other great artists would follow, as a result of the society's
efforts. Today, that same spirit continues with a broader scope. Wichita
Guitar Society, as the group is now known, embraces all styles of
music. It actively promotes quality performances in the Wichita area.
WGS meets once a month to exchange ideas, perform for each other,
plan rehersals, concerts, etc. The meetings include informal recitals
and are free to everyone! Newcomers are encouraged to bring a guitar
or other similarly stringed instrument, but one doesn't have to play
to get involved. Come in and enjoy the music performed by WGS members
and friends. Help bring "World Class Performances" back
to Wichita.
