Francisco Tárrega was born in Villareal, Spain on November 21, 1852. He was one of the most influential guitarists the world has ever known. He is considered by many to be the father of the modern classical guitar. Tárrega transcribed numerous works from the great masters, Bach, Beethoven etc., and composed many timeless works of his own. As a boy he suffered serious injury and nearly drowned in a polluted stream, at the hands of an abusive nursemaid. This injury resulted in an incurable eye disease known as opthalmia. It plagued him throughout his life. Tárrega preferred small intimate performances over the concert stage. Some believe this was because he played without nails needed for volume. Others say this was related to his childhood trauma. He completed his formal music studies in Madrid, having received first prizes in both composition and harmony. Tárrega went on to to tour much of Europe, where he captured the hearts of all that heard him.
Lagrima should be played with a lot of feeling. It is of moderate difficulty, but should be very attainable if one pays close attention to the fingerings of the left hand. The repeated open B should be subdued, allowing the beautiful melody to ring through. On the repeats try to change the dynamics a little. Rolling the double stops, (two note chords), here and there, will add character as well. More Guitar Music by Francisco Tarrega |
