Although Johann Sebastian Bach did not write any music for the guitar, transcriptions of his unaccompanied string music and music for lute have long been a part of the guitar repertoire. American Sketches came together in the summer of 1971, from works written over the course of several years. The first movement, Blues, was originally written for guitar, bass, piano and drums. The Spiritual was written later, inspired by an anthology of hymns, gospel and spirituals the author had arranged. Country Dance was an improvisation captured between songs in the recording studio while working on a completely different project. Finally, the fourth movement, Mojave, was written to complete the suite. The work has been through many hands and journeyed far over the years. The Art of Two-Line Improvisation by Jimmy Wyble edited by David Oakes

This collection of etudes, written during the 1970's, was composed as a reult of Jimmy Wyble's explorations into the musical worlds of counterpoint, harmony and chord melody improvisation for the jazz guitar. The right and left hand fingerings presented in this book were also developed as techniques needed to improvise jazz in two lines. Jimmy uses very standard jazz guitar chord shapes in these etudes; however, these shapes move through the harmony in lines rather than block chord structures. This broken chord technique creates a unique contrapuntal sound that separates Jimmy from the rest of the fingerstyle jazz guitar world. It is hoped that jazz and classical guitarists playing and working through these etudes will see many familiar chord shapes moving in new ways and creating new sounds.
