Ivor Mairants - Jazz Guitar
$10.75 - Book 99338 (Includes TAB)
Check Out Now
Ivor Mairants (1908-1998) was known widely for his sensitive and musical approach to jazz and to teaching. In this, his last work, one can feel the lifetime of experience coupled with the skill of a great communicator. The clarity of thought shown by this last manuscript of Ivor's comes from his understanding of classical guitar. He doesn't waste any notes in these pieces, nor does he obscure the musical qualities of any piece by over-complicating the harmony. Reading through this book and working the pieces carefully should give a guitarist a strong feel for what is meant by 'economy' in jazz. Some of the pieces are like single line solos, some are like jazz ballads, and some are like classical guitar pieces with a jazz flavor. This volume combines works written over a period of several years. Written in notation and tablature for fingerstyle or flatpicking guitar. Overall Difficulty:  Intermediate. 48 Pages.

Soul Jazz Guitar by Randy Johnston
$19.50 - Book/CD Set 20033BCD (Includes TAB)
Check Out Now
Soul Jazz Guitar is a collection of Randy Johnston's tunes and solos specifically designed for the intermediate student. Rather than merely transcribing solos from his CDs, he plays material at a reasonable tempo specifically with the student in mind. There are tunes ("Downtime," "The Philadelphians," and "Rolling at the Summit") that appear on his commercial CDs, but included here are versions that are new and totally unique to this project. There are also some improvisations on some familiar "standard" progressions to help the student deal with these changes when he or she encounters them at jam sessions etc. Randy has tried to present his take on the Jazz language as clearly and faithfully as possible to make the solos easy to learn. He hopes that this will lead the student not just to imitation but also to develop his or her own approach to these progressions just as he developed his own approach from listening to the playing of his role models over the years. Overall Difficulty:  Intermediate. 60 Pages.
