However, with a desire to build his own instruments, he set out to start his own business. Always an innovator, Contreras began to create a number of unconventional instruments as well as the more traditional Spanish style guitar. His best-known innovation is the "double-top" design, which was developed in the early 1970s and continues to be in great demand today. The Contreras workshop is currently run by Manuel Contreras II, who continues to create guitars with the same quality, craftsmanship and innovation passed down to him by his father. The innovative spirit is still to be found in his newer designs--the "10 Year Anniversay" model (featuring an inner-sounding back) was awarded first prize in the Joaquín Rodrigo luthier competition in October 2000.
